Rules and Structure of Texas Hold’em
Texas Hold’em is a game played with a standard 52-card deck. Each player is dealt two cards face down, called hole cards. These are the cards that only you can see and use. Then, five community cards are dealt face up on the board, in three stages: the flop (three cards), the turn (one card), and the river (one card). These are the cards that everyone can see and use. The goal is to make the best five-card poker hand using any combination of your hole cards and the community cards.
The game is divided into four betting rounds: pre-flop, flop, turn, and river. Before the first round, the two players to the left of the dealer post the small blind and the big blind, respectively. These are forced bets that start the action and create the initial pot. The size of the blinds depends on the stakes of the game. For example, in a $1/$2 game, the small blind is $1 and the big blind is $2.
The betting action starts with the player to the left of the big blind, who can choose to call (match the big blind), raise (increase the bet), or fold (discard their hand and forfeit the pot). The action then moves clockwise around the table, until everyone has had a chance to act. The betting round ends when either everyone has folded, or everyone has called the last bet or raise.
After the pre-flop round, the dealer burns one card (discards it face down) and deals the flop. Another betting round follows, starting with the player to the left of the dealer. This time, the players have the option to check (pass the action to the next player) if there is no bet in front of them, or to bet, raise, call, or fold otherwise.
The same procedure is repeated for the turn and the river, with one more card being burned and dealt each time. After the final betting round, the remaining players show their hands and the best hand wins the pot. The hand rankings are as follows, from highest to lowest:
- Royal flush: A, K, Q, J, 10 of the same suit
- Straight flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit
- Four of a kind: Four cards of the same rank
- Full house: Three cards of the same rank and two cards of another rank
- Flush: Five cards of the same suit
- Straight: Five consecutive cards of different suits
- Three of a kind: Three cards of the same rank
- Two pair: Two cards of the same rank and two cards of another rank
- One pair: Two cards of the same rank
- High card: The highest card in the hand
If two or more players have the same hand, the pot is split equally among them. If there is an odd chip, it goes to the player with the best card by suit (spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs, in descending order).
That’s the basic overview of the rules and structure of Texas Hold’em.
